This text is also a suitable reference for electrical engineers for all basic relevant topics in digital communication system design. With an emphasis on digital communications, Communication Systems Engineering, introduces the basic principles underlying the analysis and design of communication systems. In addition, this text gives a solid introduction to analog communications and a review of important mathematical foundation topics. From the Back Cover: Communication Systems Engineering, 2nd edition, offers comprehensive coverage of the basic principles in the analysis and design of modern communication systems, and review of important mathematical foundation topics. This new edition of Communication Systems Engineering exposes the reader to relevant topics from digital communication system principles including, source coding, channel coding, baseband and carrier modulation, channel distortion, channel equalization, synchronization, and wireless communications. The text is flexible and can easily be used in a one semester course or there is enough depth to cover two semesters. Its comprehensive nature makes it a great book for students to keep for reference in their professional careers.

This all-inclusive guide delivers an outstanding introduction to the analysis and design of digital communication systems. Convenient, sequential organization begins with a look at the history and classification of channel models and builds from there. Digital Communication is not like programming book which is full of coding list.

It is full of reasoning and math. Certain it is not except for its size. Two major reasons I have: 1. Almost each chapter has its own symbol system. I believe it is the most basic requirement for a dictionary or reference.

In terms of the results, I believe you can find in other book with better writing qualities and more comprehensive treatment. You can find all results for PER calculation in "Digital Communication over fading channel "; You can find more fundamental treatment in "Fundamental Wireless Communications"; For coding, we have tens of good book out there.

One may think I just replace one book with three. But even with three books, you may pay the same price. Plus better quality is the key to learn especially for beginner. If you just want to know the general ideal, I would like to recommend "Digital Communications" by John Barry et. In short, if you want to learn about digital communication, leave this book along.

This book has been over-appraised for many years. Not sure how many students are intimidated by this book so that stop pursuing this area.

Complete and rigorous By G. This is a more deep reference, who takes more emphasys on mathematical and stochastic models to explain why thing happens in digital communications.

It is fairly concise, and provides an excellent survey of modern digital communications. Its treatment of OFDM and adaptive equalization as well as more traditional equalization methods is spot on, and this book is definitely sufficient to give a grad student enough background to pursue more advanced topics. A book for thorough understanding of digital comm. By Lina C. It can serve as a reference source. Students and practitioners alike will gain a powerful insight by studying its content..

Goes through everything i have needed for my class in digital communications. Pretty even mix of theory and math. The CPM treatment is better than the other books Like a trip to the dentist..

But this one takes the prize. It is a painfully difficult book to read. The overwhelming emphasis throughout is on mathematical conciseness. The formalism and obtuse methods cloud even the simplest concepts. Examples are few and far between. If your goal is to design comm systems this book will be of no value. If your goal is to become an academic writing obscure papers about comm theory then this is your bible. Knowledge tree is not growing like this. This is the most advanced modern text on basic Communication Theory By Marco Maffei on Feb 18, This is the most advanced and rigorous modern text on basic Communication Theory.

It is a fundamental companion reference for my activities as a Communication Engineer at Thales Alenia Space. Then coming back to this book is a very interesting. It is wonderfully clear and the mathematical excursions are kept simple to emphasize the big picture.

Too many US universities are using dated conventional approaches to teaching theory-first hands-on later. Flip the order. Practical hands-on, then theory. Aside from the absurd pricetag what the heck is going on with US publishers inflating the prices on books? Nice product! The subject is challenging and esoteric. That the authors took the time to write it should be applauded. Clearly, it took many human-years of study, effort, and work to produce the fifth edition of this book.

Hopefully some good will come out of my review by way of constructive feedback. That is, this is a review, and while I am not competent to write such a book, I feel I am qualified to review it.

This books requires more work and effort on the part of the student to learn Digital Communications than it should. Almost all equations are presented as equals. That is, it is rare that important equations are noted as being important. The text makes frequent referrals to previous equations and figures several pages or even chapters back, often 2 or 3 different back references from a single page.

I found myself having to spend the time rewriting an equation or figure in the margin. It would be good if the authors did this for us. Better content management tools may make this possible. The book covers more information than can be covered in a semester, probably more information than can be deeply covered in two graduate semesters.

Some labeled equations are presented, and then modified in the subsequent prose, without a follow up labeled equation. And in some cases, the modifications are much more important than the initial equation. This is what I mean by the student must work…he or she must work to rewrite the book.

The chapters on information theory Ch. I knew more about information theory from other books prior to taking the course that used this textbook, and this textbook ended up confusing me—that is, I am going to forget what I "learned" in digital communications and refer back to my other information theory references.

This is the opposite effect an educator should strive for. It focuses more on the analysis of codes block or convolutional, for example and all but ignores the design or implementation of said codes. Lastly, there are a lot of errata. Note that there are 6 pages of errata for the 5th edition of the book. I applaud the author for keeping the errata up to date. If there is a 6th edition of this book, I hope that they are able to figure out a way to get graduate students to flesh the errata out before publication.

I have recommended to the professor that he keep using this book. For all its faults, it can be used to learn digital communications. However, I recommend a different text for information theory. The content is the same, but the binding is paper back and the paper is lower quality. For the U. Five Stars By Dr. Timothy Powell on Jun 03, The book was in the excellent condition.

The ink on the reverse side can be seen, making it hard to read. Its like 2 pages front and back overlapped. This particular edition is in a Hardcover format. It was published by McGraw-Hill Education and has a total of pages in the book. To buy this book at the lowest price, Click Here.
